Influences: The foundation—Christian home with a loving mom and pop, Christian school with teachers that taught it and modeled it, and the Church—a community to support and live it with. Holland Christian High School Bible teachers, they’re sweet. Ray Vanderlaan, who opened my eyes to the world of the Bible in powerful ways. Rob Bell, yeah...I’m a fan. Frank Wevers, mentor, friend and now fellow pastor...a man of great integrity and wisdom.

Epic Moments: I was a senior at Holland Christian High School and had this opportunity to speak in chapel...and I loved it and at the same time was humbled by how teachers and fellow students affirmed that experience. Wedding day—nothing’s been quite the same since then...in all good ways.

Favorite music: Love music! Like most genres, used to love country music, then I saw the light.

Favorite authors: C.S. Lewis, classic and fresh every time. Rob Bell, Shane Claiborne, Jim Wallis, Tony Campolo, you know...authors that push and challenge a bit.

Favorite Movies: Gladiator (being the best among a number of recent ancient historical depictions—I love classical history, what can I say?) Braveheart, Crash, and almost anything with Denzel Washington.

Favorite Food: Changes...I indulge for a while, then move on...love Mexican, Chinese, Italian stuff. Hard to top El Matador Tortilla Chips and Newman’s Peach Salsa. And fruit...I love fresh fruit.

Spare time: I’m not much of a sitter, even though my job requires plenty of that...I’m always putzing on a little project—digging, building, gardening, cleaning, wiring...you name it—I’ll try it.

Fear factors: Not many, to my own detriment I’m sure. (yes mom, I’ll try to drive slower...)

Motivation: Great oration. Jesus. My dad. Speed. The Church (big C).

Dreams yet to come true: A big neighborhood party—games, laughter, music, food, grilling...ahh, can you smell it? A bidet. To play high school football.
