WHAT IS A LIFEgroup?
A group of people journeying, serving and learning to become more like Jesus together in community. LIFEgroups are our way of living out church in smaller groups. We study scripture, support and encourage each other through tough times, and join together to serve others.
WHY HAVE LIFEgroups?
In a large church community like ours, it is fairly easy to get lost in the crowd and never really feel at home. Yet most people long for the joy of being connected in an authentic community. That is why we at Calvary Church desire for each person and family to find a place to connect with God and others...a place where the beauty of true friendships is discovered and where spiritual growth occurs in a safe environment of trust and authenticity. We will do whatever we can to make that vision a reality.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A LIFEgroup MEETING?
Every LIFEgroup has its own personality but some common elements happen in most formal group meetings. Groups typically have some kind of study. Many people find that praying in groups is their favorite part of group life. A typical group meeting lasts 1.5 hours. LIFEgroups are encouraged to also make room for informal meetings where fun, common interests, and sharing of life can be established.
HOW ARE LIFEgroups DIFFERENT FROM A SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY?
A LIFEgroup is more than just studying the Bible. When you commit to a LIFEgroup, you commit to opening up your lives to one another. The real difference between a LIFEgroup and a Bible study happens outside of the formal group time. Our goal is that all LIFEgroups will become close friends and people they turn to in time of joy and need.
WHERE AND WHEN DO LIFEgroups MEET?
Typically, groups meet in each others homes. Often groups rotate offering hospitality to one another. Although each group decides its meeting schedule, many groups find that Sunday evenings work well.
WHAT’S THE SIZE OF LIFEgroups?
We encourage no less than 3 and no more than 12 people in a group. Those numbers reflect optimal small group dynamics.
WHAT’S THE DURATION OF LIFEgroups?
Our model is for people to build long term relationships with others AND share community with new people as God leads. Although we don’t want to rush developing deep meaningful relationships within our groups, we do expect each group to be careful not to close itself off entirely so that no one new can enjoy what God has given. It is important to remember that Calvary is on a mission to love others towards God. Our LIFEgroups are a great way to unpack that commitment.
I'M SO BUSY. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
In our estimation, there is little more important than being involved in a Christ-centered LIFEgroup. Try it, and we believe you will find it is worth adjusting your schedule to accommodate it. You will probably find that the time you take to participate in a group nurtures every part of your life and makes it more meaningful. It is an energy-giver, not an energy-drainer. It will help you fit in all those other appointments and tasks because your spirit will have opportunity for renewal and you will be more prepared to tackle the challenges of life!
